Research and expertise

My research focuses on thermal comfort, overheating, and health in buildings, particularly at the intersection of climate change adaptation, energy efficiency, and occupant wellbeing. I examine how building design and occupant behaviour shape indoor heat exposure and, in turn, affect health, sleep, and everyday comfort. My work develops practical, low-energy interventions to enhance resilience to heat extremes while safeguarding wellbeing.

My research on overheating in UK homes has informed national and international policy, contributing evidence to the UK Government’s Committee on Climate Change, the Building Research Establishment, Westminster City Council, and the Zero Carbon Hub. This work received a Research Impact Prize from the Homes and Communities Agency.

A key focus of my interdisciplinary research is linking building performance directly with human health outcomes. I have shown how elevated bedroom temperatures, combined with environmental stressors, disrupt sleep and comfort, and have investigated innovative solutions, including bed-based cooling systems, to mitigate these effects.

I am Principal Investigator on the EPSRC-funded Home Heat Health (HHH) project (£1.2M), investigating indoor heat exposure impacts on health and independence, and contribute to the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Energy Resilience and the Built Environment (£5.7M), mentoring emerging researchers.

Through consultancy for the UK Government, including DESNZ, BEIS, and DECC, my research combines full-scale experiments, field studies, and advanced modelling to deliver evidence-based, policy-relevant solutions for low-carbon, resilient, and healthy homes.

Teaching

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I lead CVB117 Indoor Environment and teach CVC119 Control, Modelling and Simulation and CVA058 Building Science, guiding students through the principles of building performance, energy efficiency, and sustainable design. My teaching blends theory, practical application, and real-world case studies to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. I supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research, inspiring students to apply low-energy and low-carbon design principles in their future careers.

Profile

I am a Senior Lecturer in Building Energy at the School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering.

My academic background combines mechanical engineering with a focus on heat and fluids, and advanced expertise in building energy systems. I hold an MSc in Building Services Engineering (Distinction) from VR成人视频, which laid the foundation for my research in energy demand and sustainable building technologies.

Following my MSc, I was awarded an EPSRC scholarship to pursue postgraduate studies at the London–Loughborough Centre for Doctoral Research in Energy Demand, a collaboration between University College London (UCL) and VR成人视频. There, I completed an MRes in Energy Demand Studies (Distinction) before undertaking my PhD, which quantified the energy demand reduction potential of zonal space heating controls. I completed my PhD in 2016 and continued as a Research Associate at VR成人视频 on the multi-disciplinary EPSRC project DEFACTO.

In 2017, I joined De Montfort University, progressing from Early Career Academic Fellow to Senior Lecturer. During my tenure, I served as Programme Leader for MSc courses in Energy and Sustainable Building Design, and Energy and Sustainable Development, supporting the development of the next generation of energy professionals.

In 2020, I returned to VR成人视频 as a Lecturer in Energy Resilience and the Built Environment and became Academic Manager of the ERBE CDT—the EPSRC & SFI Centre for Doctoral Training in Energy Resilience and the Built Environment. I was promoted to Senior Lecturer in Building Energy in April 2023, reflecting my continued contributions to research, teaching, and doctoral training in energy resilience and sustainable building technologies.
