The School of Science is pleased to offer Women in Science bursaries of £1000 per annum to support women applying to study with us at Loughborough and help them develop their careers as future scientists working in industry or academia.

We are committed to improving the experience, participation and progression of women in science. We also recognise that women can face barriers to entering, progressing and thriving in some areas of science, and we want to take positive action to help address these inequalities.

This bursary is one way in which we are investing in talented women and supporting them to have a positive, rewarding and successful experience at university, while developing the confidence, skills and networks to pursue careers as future scientists in industry or academia.

Bursary holders will have the chance to work voluntarily with current Women in Science ambassadors in the School of Science to further the engagement of women in science. There will be an opportunity to become a paid student helper, and each bursary holder will be mentored by a senior woman staff member in the School, who will guide their development throughout their course.

Eligibility criteria

Open to female applicants considering 2027 entry to any of our undergraduate degrees in: Computer Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, or Natural Sciences, are invited to apply.

Please note the bursary is not available to those applying for the Foundation programme.

Amount

• £1,000 per year for each year of your programme, excluding an industrial or professional placement year if taken
• Mentoring from a senior woman member of staff in the School of Science, who will support and guide your development throughout your course
• Opportunities to work with our current Women in Science Ambassadors and contribute to activities that support the engagement and participation of women in science
• The opportunity to become a paid student helper
• Opportunities to develop your skills, experience and understanding of how we can improve the experience of women in science

Bursary payments are subject to satisfactory academic progression (achieving an overall 2:1 mark or above each year)

Application procedure

Applicants are asked to write a statement (ca. 500 words) outlining their interest in science or maths, what they think can be done to improve recruitment and retention of women and underrepresented groups in science, and what the bursary will help them achieve while at university.

We are interested in your ideas, experiences and aspirations. There is no single “right” answer, we want to understand what matters to you and how you would like to contribute to the future of science.

The award of a bursary will be based on the applicant's statement and entry qualifications, and priority will be given to applicants from underrepresented groups (including black and ethnic minority students, those with a disability, caring responsibilities, refugee status, or from low participation areas).

The deadline for applications is the 5 June 2027.

Applications will be reviewed after results confirmation in August 2027, and applicants will be notified in September 2027.
