The Fine Art MA offers an intensive studio-based environment for artists seeking to extend, reconfigure and refine their contemporary practice. It supports work across disciplines including painting, sculpture, installation, drawing, printmaking, film and video, animation, sound, performance, community arts and digital practices.

Working within a dynamic studio culture, students are encouraged to test ideas, take creative risks and explore new processes across a wide range of media. This adventurous approach is further supported by generous studio spaces, excellent workshops and adept technical staff. Students will develop an advanced, independent and critically informed artistic position through sustained experimentation, technical development, practice-based research and reflective enquiry. Through engagement with contemporary art discourse and its wider social, political and global contexts, the programme supports artists in situating their work within broader cultural and professional frameworks.

Delivered over 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time, this exciting studio-based course equips participants with the confidence, critical awareness and professional skills required to sustain a contemporary art practice, work in the creative industries or progression to doctoral study.

Why you should study this degree

The course will prepare you to work professionally as an artist, whilst also supporting students who wish to transition into curation, museum studies, arts management and the broader creative industries. There will be several gallery and museum visits, supported by opportunities to meet and learn from visiting artists and curators.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are to:

  • Embolden students to critically interrogate, extend and transform their established practice through sustained experimentation and methodological risk-taking.
  • Empower students to expand their technical, material and conceptual repertoire in contemporary fine art practice.

The aims of this module are to:

  • Develop systematic and critically informed understanding of research methodologies appropriate to contemporary Fine Art practice.
  • Facilitate students to critically evaluate and synthesise theoretical, historical and cultural frameworks, examining how these contexts inform and shape practice-based enquiry.

The aims of this module are to:

  • Develop students’ systematic and critically informed understanding of the theoretical, historical and cultural frameworks that inform contemporary Fine Art practice.
  • Equip students with advanced analytical skills to interpret and evaluate artworks, artistic practices and discourses thereby, enabling them to situate their own practice within relevant contextual, theoretical and historical frameworks.

  • Enable students to exercise independent judgement in responding to the conceptual, practical and professional demands of exhibition production.
  • Equip students with the skills to produce a public exhibition of professional standards.

How you'll be assessed

You will be assessed through coursework: primarily through the production of artworks, but also including putting on exhibitions, writing theoretical essays and producing reports that analyse your artwork and its development. The course鈥檚 final assessment includes a public exhibition of your artworks.

Alan is a practitioner working with lens-based media, with a particular interest in how alternative and historical photographic processes can inform and expand contemporary fine art approaches to image-making.

Your development

Students will learn self-sustaining and renewable methods for artistic production, enabling them to work productively and independently after the course.

Professional initiative will be nurtured by improving student’s understanding of the art world, institutional curating approaches and funding opportunities for artists. Thereby giving participants, a springboard to future success as professional artists and/or working in the creative industries.

Throughout the course, visiting artists and curators will teach on the course, improving networking contacts for students and exposure to actively working arts professionals.

Future career

The course supports your development as an artist and is rooted in studio practice, which provides real-world analogue skills that can complement the advance of AI. Fine Art study nurtures initiative, creativity and independence; all capacities that can be applied to multiple disciplines in the creative industries.

Whilst some Fine Art students go onto be practicing artists, others develop careers in curating, arts and event management, education, Film and TV, graphics and illustration, performance and theatre, set and prop production, publishing or advertising. Beyond direct employment, students also freelance, set up their own businesses or progress to academic research via a PhD.

Studying part-time

The fee stated is for a full-time student undertaking a master’s programme of 180 credits. Part-time students will spread this credit load over two or more years of study as agreed with the School/Department. Fees will be charged for the credit weighting of modules taken in a given year. The tuition fees payable can be calculated by dividing the published fee by 180 and then multiplying by the number of credits to be taken in the specific year.

Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase in subsequent years by a small amount (will not exceed 5%) to take into account inflationary pressures.
