The MA Illustration at VR成人视频 is a future-focused postgraduate programme designed to develop illustrators as innovative visual thinkers, critical storytellers, and multidisciplinary creative problem solvers. Rooted in the power of the image to communicate complex ideas, influence audiences, and inspire change, this course invites students to advance their illustrative practice across conventional, emerging, experimental, and future-facing contexts.

Bringing together world-leading expertise in visual communication, digital creativity, narrative and design, the programme supports students in developing an authentic and impactful illustrative voice. The course acknowledges that illustrators today work across an ever-expanding set of platforms, media and contexts, including the informed and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence. Students will therefore be encouraged to adopt a personalised and investigative, experimental approach that integrates craft, conceptual thinking, digital innovation, and applied contextual knowledge.

Through a personalised route of study, combining explorative making, speculative visual inquiry, real-world design challenges, and professional collaboration, students will graduate with a research-informed and industry-aligned practice enabling them to navigate the creative landscape with confidence, adaptability, and purpose.

Course structure

Shape your illustrative practice through a series of research-led and studio-based modules exploring visual language, cultural influence, narrative storytelling, speculative design and professional collaboration.

Over the programme, you'll define your identity as a creative practitioner, tailoring projects to your own interests, ambitions and career aspirations. Through exposure with professional partnerships, you’ll identify specific areas of employment, whilst experimenting with emerging technologies and creative methodologies, culminating in a major self-directed project that showcases your distinctive creative identity and professional ambitions.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are to:

  • Develop the foundational principles and emerging possibilities of a personalised visual language as a communicative system.
  • Produce a self-directed body of illustrative material that evidences an advanced understanding of process as a method of enquiry.
  • Critically evaluate how visual grammar, mark-making, narrative structure, symbolism, and embodied processes contribute to the construction of purposeful visual meaning.
  • Synthesise contextual research, reflective analysis, and consideration of audience in the refinement of a personal visual language.

The aims of this module are to:

  • Examine the historical and contemporary roles of illustration as a form of cultural commentary, influence, and visual persuasion.
  • Analyse how illustrated images function within political movements, social reform, identity formation, and global communication, drawing on diverse case studies such as satire, propaganda, memorialisation, activism, and environmentalism.
  • Articulate a personal critical position that situates an authentic illustrative voice within wider cultural, ideological, and ethical contexts.
  • Conceptualise and apply theoretically informed approaches to a personalised illustrative practice, as a vehicle for influence and meaningful cultural contribution.

The aim of this module is to introduce postgraduate design students to the principles and practice of human-centered research to identify opportunities for the design of product and service experiences.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are to:

  • Critically investigate and apply principles of speculative design as methods for imagining, challenging, and articulating alternative social and environmental futures.
  • Construct narrative image-based works - including sequential, interactive, and hybrid visual forms - that communicate complex ideas through research-informed storytelling.
  • Evolve Illustrative design for emerging technologies - including immersive environments and motion-based image making - as tools for creating interactive, experiential, or future-oriented visual communication.
  • Evaluate the ethical, cultural, political, and societal implications of design futures.

The aims of this module are to:

  • Critically design and justify a research-informed, practice-led enquiry by situating an emerging creative practice within relevant societal, cultural, or organisational contexts, and by identifying meaningful issues, gaps, and opportunities for further exploration.
  • Identify, engage, and collaborate with stakeholders, partners, and communities through considered communication, negotiation, and cocreation methods, strengthening professionalism and interdisciplinary working aligned with contemporary creative industries.
  • Develop advanced ethical awareness, including completion of ethics training, preparation of ethical documentation, and the application of responsible methods for consent, participation, safeguarding, and data management in creative and applied research settings.
  • Construct a coherent methodological framework that synthesises primary and secondary research, with creative experimentation, culminating in a rigorous, feasible, and academically grounded Major Project Proposal.

Compulsory modules

The aims of this module are to:

  • Design, articulate, and pursue an extended, practice-based research inquiry that integrates theoretical positioning, methodological rigour, and critical contextual awareness within a chosen field of visual communication.
  • Synthesise advanced research and production processes - including iterative experimentation, prototyping, testing, and reflection - towards the development of an innovative and conceptually coherent major project.
  • Facilitate a sophisticated realisation of creative visual material, narrative, or interactive outcomes through the integration of appropriate analogue, digital, or hybrid technical processes.
  • Critically position and evaluate a design outcome within professional and research-based debates, culminating in a resolved body of work that evidences readiness for professional progression or further academic study.

How you'll be assessed

We鈥檒l give you constructive feedback on your work throughout the programme to help you develop your potential. You鈥檒l be assessed through coursework-based outcomes including portfolios, presentations, written reports, exhibitions and a dissertation. There are no exams. You'll demonstrate your development through practical projects, critical reflection, stakeholder engagement activities and a final major project showcasing advanced creative and research skills.

This includes a guest lecture series and various professional involvement from external partners. The Illustration MA programme is centred within a studio culture which promotes independent work and peer encouragement. Your development

Throughout the MA Illustration, you'll develop advanced skills in pictorial communication, narrative design, critical thinking, research, professional practice and creative problem-solving.

You’ll learn to position your work within cultural, social and commercial contexts, gaining the confidence to collaborate with stakeholders, communities and industry partners, strengthening your communication, project management and interdisciplinary working abilities. The programme includes ethics training and professional research practices, preparing you to work responsibly within creative industries and research environments.

Beyond the studio, you'll benefit from field trips, technical workshops, exhibitions, presentations, collaborative projects and opportunities to engage with external organisations and partners, helping you to gain valuable real-world connections and identify future career opportunities. The course culminates in a major project and showcase, enabling you to present a professional portfolio and establish connections that support progression into the creative industries or further academic study.

Each student will be allocated a personal tutor who offers mentorship and support throughout the programme. VR成人视频 also offers an extensive range of societies for students to explore their social, sporting or creative aspirations.

All prospective students should provide a portfolio showing examples of their work relevant to illustration, animation, fine art, and visual communication. Your portfolio should be no more than 20 pages and no larger than 5MB. 

Your portfolio should show us that you can draw and present work that is of high quality. It should show us how you think; include interesting projects about topics that matter. Show us how each project grew and changed. Show us how each project works in real life; demonstrate that you thought about who the work is for. If you can, present each project in the format it was made for. Show us who you are; help us to understand what kind of artist and designer you are through the projects you choose. If you have motion or animation-based work then show us by using storyboards, screengrabs, and character modelling.

Our Design staff have written a portfolio advice guide, giving you tips and advice on how to prepare and present your work.
